  2. Wernher von Braun for the Apollo project. The
  3. two-stage Saturn IB was used for launching
  4. Apollo spacecraft into orbit around the
  5. Earth. The three-stage Saturn V sent Apollo
  6. spacecraft to the Moon, and launched the
  7. Skylab space station. The lift- off thrust of
  8. a Saturn V was 3,500 tonnes. After Apollo and
  9. Skylab, the Saturn rockets were retired in
  10. favour of the Space Shuttle.
